While I've been a fan of IA for years, I want to be semi-ready for its demise, which I fear will come soon.

I'll concede that there is no other source like it, but can anyone suggest alternative places to go for PD/open source stuff?

I already check out publicdomaintorrents.com; movies.blogspot.com; publicdomainflicks.com, mspaintnerd.com/Public%20Domain%20Movies.html, and moviepowder.com.

Your suggestions will be most welcome.

I really doubt that the archive will fall anytime soon. The movies are just a small part of the content here, and the challenge to the Google Books agreement is a very high priority right now. This agreement would give Google a virtual monopoly on electronic texts, including out of print and public domain titles that are very important here. IA has a very small staff, though, and this is stretching them to the limit.

When searching, use this instead of g@@gle:

public movie domain torrents is a good site to download pd movies and it is free. i use it quite a lot. classic cinema online is also good. i use the firefox download helper to download from classic cinema online and it is also free. do not bother with the forums on public movie domain torrents they are full of spam. legit torrents also have pd movies to download.

Thanks! I already use public domain movie torrents. Classic cinema online looks good, and I'll check into the download helper.

I'm not so sure about legit torrents. I get no hits if I put "public domain" in the "search torrents" field, but lots if I let that field open and just go after the "movies" category. But results include The Great Escape and the original House of Wax. Is there a way to search for PD flicks only? Or must I just sort through the whole mess?

Unfortunately some of the "alternate" sites listed in some of the above posts actually host their films on the IA and as a result if the IA goes down so will their links.

Freddie, you're not alone feeling that way. It's a shame when the only people showing concern for this site are the patrons. What staff is doing is anyone's guess. Used to be quite a few sites where you could download movies without having to download their software too. Retrovision Media just got the ax and beyond the Archive, I don't think there is too much else out there. There's still a lot of neat stuff here so I would recommend that you download as much as you can. There is one site that's still running but it doesn't have much selection and it hasn't been updated in years, but what's there is pretty cool, and this is it:

It ain't much but there it is.

This isn't films, but if you're interested in music there are a lot of good Creative Commons tracks at jamendo.com

Jamendo is also organised in a much better way than IA anyway, especially the tags section which lets you easily find the kind of music you want. There's also a variety of ratings systems (most played, most playlisted, most downloaded, highest rated etc) which lets you easily sort the crap from the good stuff.

Freddy Jaye;
It took me three months to find IA. The other public domain
sites charge us to use their "free" site. I think IA is the only one that is free to the public-sad isn't it?
